- Aspirin
Topical aspirin is absorbed locally by skin. In an emergency to treat a bee, wasp, hornet or other insect sting, moisten the area with cool water and gently rub an aspirin into it. When the pain relief begins to wear off, moisten the area again and the relief will persist.
- Meat Tenderizer
Meat tenderizers contain papain, an enzyme that destroys insect venoms. Their topical application will stop the pain and itching of an insect sting. The sooner applied, the better.
Neither of these treatments is adequate for people who develop generalized allergic reactions when stung.
Patients allergic to aspirin should not apply this medicine to their skin.
